Hazards related to permafrost and to permafrost degradation have become a major concern in many Alpine areas. In recent years, many events due to permafrost degradation occurred in the Alps and caused eventually severe damage, whereas other cases represent significant threats to either urbanized areas, infrastructures or touristic activities.
Permafrost related hazards are therefore increasingly considered by national, regional and local risk management authorities. Various management initiatives are developed. Prevention tools like permafrost maps, rock glacier or rockfall inventories, site specific monitoring, … The Chamonix Valley is particularly exposed to various natural hazards and is one the « integrated risk management territories » recently defined in the French Alps.
This round-table offers an opportunity to confront permafrost scientists and local stakeholders in charge of risk management. It proposess a panel discussion with invited representatives of risk management authorities from France and Switzerland.
